Beachy, windswept, and unassuming, Île de Ré is often seen as the antidote to the French Riviera. The beaches are sandy, the climate is mild, and the west coast sunsets are superior to the other side of the country. About two hours north of Bordeaux, a single bridge connects the island to the mainland, and the controlled access keeps Île de Ré quiet. CAMARGUE ON HORSEBACK
Perhaps best known for its salt, the coastal region in southern France is one-part southern bayou and another part rugged horse country.
