Care Guide: The RL67 Jacket
The RL67 is modeled after a jacket Mr. Lauren himself has owned and worn since 1971. Here’s how to help ensure yours—or any other wool-blend suit jacket, blazer, or sport coat—lasts just as long.
How to keep it fresh:
(beyond regular dry cleaning)
- Use a clothes brush. Gently brush with a soft natural-bristle clothes brush after each wear to remove dust, dirt, and lint. Brushing also helps to restore the fibers and keep the fabric looking smooth.
- Address spills immediately. Blot (do not rub) with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb excess moisture. If the stain is small, you can use a wool-friendly stain remover. Be sure to test in an inconspicuous area first.
- Use mild detergent. For spot cleaning larger stains, take a mild detergent made for wool or dry cleaning fabrics and apply gently.
- Steam to remove wrinkles and odors. A steam iron or handheld garment will help to eliminate wrinkles and odors without causing any harm to the fabric. It also helps to restore the natural fibers and prevent the fabric from becoming misshapen.
- Avoid direct heat. Never use an iron directly on the fabric without steam, as it could scorch or damage the fibers.
- Avoid wearing the blazer on consecutive days. Allow it to air out between wears to reduce odors and help it maintain its structure. Rotate between other jackets and outerwear in your wardrobe.
- Use padded or wide hangers. This will help preserve the shoulder shape and prevent stretching at the seams.
- Button the jacket (or at least the top button) when hanging. This allows it to rest naturally, and helps maintain the shape, especially in the shoulders and chest.
- Leave plenty of space in your closet. Try to avoid packing it in too tightly, which can cause the jacket to lose its shape.
- Use a garment bag. If you are storing it for a season, place it in a breathable garment bag to keep it dust-free. Avoid plastic, as it can trap moisture and cause the fabric to deteriorate.
- Keep it in a cool, dry place. Store it away from direct sunlight and humidity, as excessive exposure to both can affect the fabric's color and texture.
- De-pill gently. Use a fabric shaver or a lint roller to remove any pilling that may form on the wool-blend fabric. Be gentle to avoid damaging the fibers.
- Pay special attention to high-contact areas, like the cuffs and collar, where oil, dirt, and fabric wear may build up.
- Freshen it up with cedar or sachets. Store it with cedar blocks or scent sachets to help control moisture, prevent moths, and give it a fresh smell.
- Do not spray fragrance directly onto the jacket, as it can stain the fabric or create a lasting odor.
- When wearing it in the car, avoid sitting with the jacket scrunched up on your back. This causes strain, especially at the shoulders and lapel areas.
- Hand wash or dry clean carefully, and only when necessary. Frequent washing or using high heat in the dryer can lead to shrinkage or fabric distortion.
- Remove pilling regularly. Wool-blend fabric may develop pills over time. Use a fabric shaver or pill remover to gently remove pills and fuzz to avoid fabric distortion and to keep it looking smooth.
- Fix loose stitching and seams promptly. If you notice any loose threads, missing buttons, or small tears, address them right away. This will keep the fabric from stretching further and help maintain its overall structure.
If it gets wet:
- Blot gently with a clean, dry towel. Blot (not rub) the fabric to absorb as much water as possible.
- Avoid wringing. This can stretch or distort the fabric.
- Lay it flat on a clean, dry towel. Reshape it to its original shape, smoothing out any wrinkles gently with your hands. You can stuff the sleeves and chest area with rolled-up towels to help maintain its shape.
- Avoid direct heat sources. Never dry it near direct heat such as a radiator, heater, or direct sunlight. This can shrink the fabric or cause it to lose its natural texture.
- Hang to dry. Use a padded hanger in a well-ventilated, cool, dry area. Avoid using a regular hanger, as this can distort the jacket's shape, particularly at the shoulders.
- Steam to remove wrinkles after drying. Use a steamer or an iron with a steam function, holding it at a safe distance from the fabric to avoid overheating or wetting it again.
- Do not tumble dry. This can cause it to shrink or distort. Air-drying is the safest option for wool fabrics.
- If any wrinkles remain after drying, carefully iron with steam on a low or wool setting. You can also steam the fabric, as this will be gentler and reduce the risk of damaging the fibers.
- Air it out. If there is a damp or musty smell after it gets wet, hang it outside or in a well-ventilated area for a few hours.
- Use a fabric freshener or a cedar block. These can help neutralize odors.
- Consider a water-resistant treatment. To prevent future damage, you can apply a fabric-safe, water-repellent spray to the jacket.
